Job description

Great Britain’s gambling industry is in a constant state of change, fuelled by shifting consumer behaviour and the rapid growth of technology. It’s high profile politically too, and the legislation controlling gambling is constantly under scrutiny. Within this uniquely challenging and evolving environment, The Gambling Commission’s role is to ensure that gambling is crime free, fair and open - and that children and vulnerable people are protected. Now they need you to play a key role in their future, driving the change needed to ensure that the Gambling Commission can meet the growing complexity of the market and their developing regulatory remit.

The Gambling Commission are now looking for a Company Secretary to support an unprecedented period of strategic change within the organisation on an interim basis for a fixed term contract of 12 months.

Gambling touches almost every part of society and that means the Commission’s work does too. They work with the legal system, the public health system, community groups and the industry itself to understand how they can protect the interests of as many people as possible, as effectively as possible. Joining the Gambling Commission means joining a dynamic, high profile sector and being at the cutting edge of regulation, where the work you do has a real impact on people’s lives. It also means joining an organisation that is inclusive, that respects work-life balance and is completely dedicated to helping you achieve your full potential. Whether that’s through flexible working, really understanding how you work best or exposing you to real opportunities to challenge yourself, if you’re passionate about making your mark on the industry and on society, then the Gambling Commission will help you do that.

As the Company Secretary, you will be tasked with leading a strategic review of the Gambling Commission’s governance framework and arrangements.

Providing high level advice to the Chairman, Committee Chairs and the Chief Executive regarding governance issues, you will work to continuously improve the governance framework and structures to enhance accountability.

This is a key, vital role that will see you getting involved in a variety of operational activities that enhance areas such as the complaints process, the quality of documentation produced and the business conducted by the Board and Committee.

Additionally, you will help with the recruitment of talented and enthusiastic Commissioners and will lead, manage and coach a small team of Governance Managers.

Interested? Could you thrive in this incredible role? If so, you will need:

- To be an experienced Company Secretary or have equivalent experience as a governance professional
- A track-record of success in supporting and developing colleagues
- The ability to lead a small team of Governance Managers giving day to day practical support and guidance
- The ability to secure the confidence of senior internal stakeholders across the Commission
- The resilience to deliver at pace, often through high levels of ambiguity and organisational complexity
- To be capable of balancing both strategic and operational governance priorities, whilst carrying out a review of overall approach to governance

As the Company Secretary, you’ll be a motivated leader with an influential, decisive approach. Keen to make change happen, you’ll also possess outstanding communication skills and the ability to enthuse and engage others.

The closing date for applications is the 8th August 2018.
