The last census taken in the UK

United Kingdom Census 2001

This was carried out in April 2001, and was the 20th national census to have been carried out in the UK. It revealed interesting facts about the social and ethnic make up of Brain and what changes had taken place since the last census. It covered England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Statistics and facts were collected on issues like race, ethnicity, religion salary and profession. The forms of the census required them to be self completed.

Some basics facts that the census showed were:

Over 54 million people (92% of the population) registered themselves as White British

Over 1.4 million people (4% of the population) registered themselves as Black British.

Over 300,000 people gave their religion as being ‘Jedi’ (taken from a character in the Star Wars films).
